SHWI aims to create brain-friendly work environments in the mines

As mining work becomes more digital, remote, and cognitively demanding, operators face a growing risk of mental overload. The SHWI feasibility study, carried out by flow2thrive, CDE, and RISE, explored how the industry can better understand and measure cognitive load to create healthier and more sustainable work environments.

The project resulted in the first framework for the Sustainable Human Work Index (SHWI) — a structured way to assess cognitive demands in modern mining environments. Interviews with companies such as Boliden, LKAB, SSAB, Volvo, ABB allconfirmed both the need and strong interest in a practical solution.

The next phase is now funded (Vinnova and Swedish Metals and Minerals) and underway and will be ongoing for the next 3 years. Building on the feasibility results, the team will develop the first functional version of the SHWI digital platform and begin validating it directly within the industry, taking an important step toward safer, more brain-friendly workplaces.
